Above a Bachelor degree, these modular programmes are studied through seminars, lectures and project work. There will be classes for you to develop research and study methods but you will need a disciplined approach to your work. They normally entail a major research project in an area of your choice, negotiated with your tutor. Course titles that start with MA, MRes or MSc are Master degrees.
Above Masters level, a PhD usually takes three years to complete whereas an MPhil takes two. The research is written up as a thesis, showing originality and critical judgement at the leading edge of your chosen subject.
