Health, Medical Science and Society
Our reputation for excellence is underpinned by innovative research. Our programmes within the Institute for Health, Medical Sciences and Society are fully accredited by the relevant professional bodies. The British Psychological Society, Health Professions Wales, Nursing and Midwifery Council, General Medical Council, Estyn, Complementary Therapies, and the Care Council for Wales have separately assessed our courses as meeting the levels of quality they expect. Our facilities are equally impressive, with a range of technologically advanced lecture theatres and seminar rooms, as well as laboratories and equipment that provide a practical supplement for all theoretical learning. Our Nursing simulation laboratory supports other disciplines and provides modern simulation facilities where nursing students can work on computerised adult and child models. Our Experimental Cubicles provide excellent facilities for students in psychology to undertake their own psychological experiments. To enhance the student experience Sport & Exercise Sciences has linked up with many professional sports teams and organisations to encourage students to analyse athletes and their performance in our Notational Analysis Suite and Human Performance Lab. Such activities have been acknowledged, as Glyndŵr University’s Sport & Exercise Science degrees were rated the best in the UK, based on student satisfaction (Data source)
Our Foundation degrees are very practice-focused whereas our professional course, the Bachelor degrees deliver theoretical principles in a classroom environment interspersed with periods of supervised professional practice in order to apply these theories. A key feature of supervised practice, including simulation, is the opportunity for the student to learn in a safe environment. We also offer a small number of ‘theory-only’ degrees which are ideal for an international market as they can be applied in context. At post-graduate level, the Institute has a range of programmes at Master’s and Doctoral level. These programmes provide expert academic and practical support to students from a wide range of professional backgrounds in health studies, social care, education, psychology, complementary therapies and others. This further improves the university’s standing within the professions and service industries. Typically, a public service, voluntary organisation or independent company will want to have a particular area investigated and our postgraduate programmes provide suitable academic contexts for this work. English language support is also available alongside our academic provision, for no extra cost. Glyndŵr University’s approachable teaching staff are experienced with the needs of international students and are able to provide support and welfare alongside the International Welfare team, which will be given on a friendly, informal basis, or through more formal support mechanisms, depending on the needs of the individual. The vocabulary of the industry is not something to be intimidated by as teaching staff are able to explain this in context.
