Professional Diploma in Marketing

The Chartered Institute of Marketing is the leading international professional marketing and sales body with members worldwide. First established in 1911 it defines the marketing and sales standards that operate in the UK and is the global champion of best marketing and sales practice. The Institute exists to develop both the marketing and sales professions, maintain professional standards and improve the skills of marketing and sales practitioners, enabling them to deliver exceptional results for their organisations. Professional Certificate

The certificate level is ideal if you have recently started working in a marketing environment and require a first stage qualification. The emphasis of the certificate level is on practitioner skills and building a sound foundation in all major marketing concepts and theories.

Professional Diploma

The diploma level is the next stage if you have previously been awarded the Professional Certificate in Marketing or hold a degree or equivalent. If you do not have the above qualifications, but are at a supervisory level and can demonstrate appropriate experience in marketing or sales you can also join at this level.

NB:  If your first language is not English, it is recommended by the CIM that you have a minimum standard in the use of English equivalent to the British Council IELTS band 6.

Masters Progression: Students wishing to continue further can consider our MSc in Marketing Management which has been designed to incorporate CIM’s Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing.

Career opportunities

CIM students come from a wide variety of business backgrounds such as public sector, telecommunications, agriculture, leisure, tourism, food, transport, manufacturing and financial services. Some are currently studying for degrees or postgraduate awards but recognise the competitive edge a professional qualification gives them. Others may be thinking about or just starting a career in sales or marketing and do not have any formal qualifications, but want to gain the marketing skills that will help them achieve their professional development goals. There is a level to suit everyone's career aims.

Assessment

You will have one 3-hour hour examination and will be required to complete 3 assignments or projects for the Professional Diploma.  Examinations can be taken in December and/or June each year.

Entry requirements

Professional Certificate

You should be educated to A level or level 3 standard or have relevant experience in marketing.

Professional Diploma

  • CIM Professional Certificate in Marketing (2002 or 2008 syllabus) OR
  • Any business or marketing Bachelors or Masters Degree (or equivalent qualification) where a minimum of one third of credits come from marketing (i.e. 120 credits in Bachelors degrees or 60 credits with Masters degrees) OR
  • Experience in a marketing management role that has provided potential students with ability to evidence that they can meet the learning outcomes from the Professional Certificate in Marketing.

Course length

1 year part time for each level

* The next intake for the Professional Certificate and the Professional Postgraduate Diploma will be in September 2012.

All three levels are delivered over two semesters, one evening a week. Two modules are taught each semester (see syllabus for selection and timing).

Professional Certificate: Thursday 6pm – 9pm each semester and flexible support. Enrolment in September or January.

Professional Diploma: Thursday 6pm – 9pm each semester and flexible support. Enrolment in September or January.

NB: The day may be changed to meet student or resource requirements.

Semester 1 (September - December) includes two Saturday schools in September, two in October and two in November, 9am – 4pm.

Semester 2 (January – June) includes two Saturday schools in May, 9am – 4pm
