BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Sciences

Our new degree focuses on the scientific study of sport, exercise, physical activity and health from a multi-disciplinary perspective.

You will investigate issues related to sports performance, physical activity and exercise. Our applied ethos ensures that all our teaching is informed by contemporary research and practice. The department prides itself on its dedication to students and has been placed in the top five departments nationwide in the National Student Survey every year since 2007*.

We are passionate about ensuring your holistic development and use a personal development profile to help you to identify and work towards your particular needs and career aspirations.  The degree is designed to:

  • Develop your knowledge and understanding of the scientific study of sport and exercise sciences as well as enhance your analytical and key transferable skills
  • Increase your employability by tailoring your degree to your specific needs - among 2010 graduates the university has a 94.7 per cent employability rate**
  • Improve your practical skills and enhance ability to work in an applied environment - this is achieved by the practical nature of the modules.

Course content

BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Sciences

In level 4 (year 1) you will be introduced to the core theories and concepts in sport and exercise sciences, then in level 5 you will apply that knowledge and your skills to a sporting or exercise environment. 

In addition you will be able to tailor your degree with a choice of modules including: Performance Analysis, Sport Practice (periodisation and strength and conditioning) or a module on PE in schools, which is designed to prepare students for a PGCE. 

At level 6 you will have the opportunity to undertake an independent study on something that interests you and that will increase your employability. Alongside the independent study module you will study applied physiology and sport and exercise psychology and then have the choice of physical activity, health and disease, notational analysis of sport, technique analysis or working in a sport or exercise environment.

Career opportunities

Sport and Exercise Sciences graduates have gone into a range of careers in health, fitness and the leisure industry, sports development, teaching, the armed forces, and the police. Just some of the job titles of our graduates include cardiac physiologist, physiotherapy assistant, fitness instructor, lifestyle consultant and exercise professional. Other graduates have taken on roles such as a strength and conditioning internship with Welsh Rugby Football Union, Welsh Rugby Union development officer or lecturers in further education.

Several students have started their own businesses, often in personal training, strength and conditioning and coaching. The degree not only equips you with a range of career-linked skills but supports progression to PhD, Masters or undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. With the 2012 Olympics around the corner, the prospects for those with sport-related qualifications has never been better

Assessment

There are no formal examinations on this degree. Instead you will be assessed through a range of methods to test your knowledge and understanding, including essays, lab reports, video analysis, practical assessments, presentations, portfolios, case studies and seminar work. In addition you will have the opportunity to work with a range of personnel from athletes to community-based groups.

Entry requirements and applying

You will need 260 UCAS points at A level or equivalent, with a science background being an advantage but not essential. See information on general entry requirements.

Before you are offered an unconditional place on this course you will be required to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) form and pay the appropriate fee, so that a check can be made on your suitability for working with children and vulnerable adults.
