Research and consultancy in the School of Business
The staff of the Business School engage in research, consultancy and scholarly activitywhich contribute to the academic content and level of our programmes. We have established a Research Interest Group (RIG) to provide focused support for staff engaged in research and consultancy and act as a forum for staff to share their research work, to discuss developments in business practice, and to present working papers in our regular seminar. Several of our staff are able to act as supervisors to students undertaking both Masters and PhD dissertations because of their methodological and subject expertise. At present, four prospective MBA students are working on their PhD proposals and six members of the team are currently working on their doctorates research. This staff research has considerably enhanced their methodological and supervisory skills on undergraduate projects and postgraduate dissertations. Bethan Lloyd-Jones is finalising her PhD on “The Economic Development of the Denbighshire Coalfield; 1854-1914”. Bethan’s research has enhanced her supervisory skills on undergraduate projects and Master dissertations. Mike Green’s research interests are in the areas of people resourcing, employee reward and development and he is currently preparing a PhD proposal on “Role Stretch”. These interests have informed his teaching on a range of BA, MA, MBA and CIPD professional programmes. Neil Pritchard is working on his PhD proposal on “How Employment Tribunals determine Employment Status”. His research interests have enlightened the curriculum development of Business Ethics, Employment Law, International Business Law and International Trading Law at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Janet Green’s PhD proposal is in the area of “The Applications of Marketing and Management within the Sport Arena”. Janet interests have informed her teaching on a range of BA, CIM and CIPD professional programmes. Two team members (Mr B. Jones and Dr A. Binsardi) are actively involved in Consultancy Projects under the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) Program which disseminate their knowledge through work based learning opportunities in the business community and provide them with business intelligence to underpin the curriculum and contribute to local and regional economic growth. John Mortimer is a member of the Chartered Institute of Transport and the Chartered Management Institute. He has held non executive directorships and also acts as consultant to emerging businesses in Conwy. John’s consultancy has enlightened the curriculum development of Operations Management, Logistics, Present and Future Strategy at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The above staff Involvement with Professional Bodies such as Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), and Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) provides an on-going engagement with new practice which is particularly relevant to vocational modules such as those relating to the management of people. At conferences, staff is updated on research undertaken by Professional Bodies on best practice and new thinking feeding into both our consultancy projects and our enhanced curriculum. Our research and consultancy orientation is evidenced through our academic partnership agreements with Georgetown University, Washington DC, and with Harris Manchester College, Oxford. The MBA module Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Innovation was developed jointly by Dr Mark Rogers from HMC, Oxford, and the team at Glyndŵr University. Similarly, the research-driven MBA modules International Business Environment, e-Commerce, and International Business Competitiveness were developed in partnership with Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA and are delivered by Professor Ronkainen and Professor Guerrero Cusumano from Georgetown. Excellent statistical and quantitative research support is continuously provided by Isobel Davies, Sandra King and Jeff Pugh for both academic staff and students engaged in research needing to use SPSS (Statistical Support Package for the Social Sciences). Isobel, Sandra and Jeff have assisted research and statistical analysis for the Institute of Health Research, doctors at Glan Clwyd and Wrexham Maelor hospitals. This work has influenced the development of the up-to-date curriculum in both undergraduate (BA, HNC) and postgraduate levels (MA, MBA, CIMA) such as Information Management, Managing Finance, Statistics and Quantitative Analysis modules. In a nutshell, the members of staff have a wide variety of research interests and published works in the area of Strategic Management, Supply Chain, Managerial Economics, Performance Management, Leadership, Marketing and Human Resource. The current Departmental Research Co-ordinator is Dr. Binsardi. Research and consultancy projects have been and, in some cases, continue to be supported by the European Funds, Local Government Association, Economic and Social and Research Council, Department of Trade and Industry and other agencies. At present, the School is working with Cardiff University in providing research and consultancy expertise to regional industry with access to knowledge and skills thereby promoting the adoption of best and sustainable practice within the industry. Glyndŵr University's Research Repository provides free access to the research outputs of the academic and research staff of the University.
