School of Science & Technology
Research in Science is undertaken within the . It consists of six groups, namely, the Centre for Water Soluble Polymers, the Phillips Hydrocolloids Research Centre and the Advanced Materials Research Laboratory, which are situated on the Plas Coch site, Wrexham, and the Centre for Modern Optics, the Polymerisation Reaction Engineering Group and the Solar Energy Research Centre, which are based at the OpTIC Technium in St Asaph.
The research activity in materials chemistry undertaken by these groups has underpinned a submission to the Metallurgy and Materials Unit of Assessment in RAE2008. The Centres are well equipped with a range of specialist instrumentation and have benefited significantly through the Science Research Infrastructure Fund initiative.
Research activities are funded through a range of sponsors including Research Councils, EU, UK/Welsh Assembly Government and Industry, and total research income for the period 2001-2008 was ~£3M. The Centres are also involved in knowledge transfer and commercial activities funded through the Technology Strategy Board ‘Knowledge Transfer Partnership Scheme’ and the Welsh Assembly Government ‘Academic Expertise for Business Programme’.
Research in Engineering is conducted within the Engineering Research Centre (ERC) which has experienced a consistent growth in research activity over recent years accompanied with a continuous increase in quality research outputs and postgraduate research student completions. The ERC is a multidisciplinary centre that is engaged in research collaboration with a number of European and UK Universities. The research expertise within the centre spans the following research areas: Aeronautical, Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, including aerodynamics, CFD, aerospace structures, FEA, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, powertrain and combustion, flight dynamics and control, as well as advanced process control, signal and image processing, power electronics and power systems design and control.
The centre is involved in a number of funded Knowledge Transfer Partnership programmes with industrial partners.
