Bringing together a range of academic subjects which explore various aspects of society, the Institute provides a focus for work across disciplines which often overlap and rely on the sharing of approaches and ideas to facilitate genuine innovation. For example, in the field of health our academics’ expertise reflects a wide range of specialisms from nursing and psychology through to sport science and public health.
This approach is embodied by the University’s Centre for the Child, opened in 2011. Based on leading Scandinavian concepts, the Centre allows child development workers to hone their academic and practical skills, focusing on an integrated approach to child development. The £2m Centre includes a wide variety of specialisms as they affect children including health, nutrition, child psychology, exercise and education.
The Institute works to ensure courses are relevant to society as a whole, with a strong basis in applied research and an emphasis on challenging pre-conceived ideas and developing new thinking which will lead the way for future developments in these vital areas.
